For us, the syringes are childhood horror that we will never forget in a lifetime. But here we are talking about veterinary syringes. Needles are used in veterinary care in a variety of ways.
They can be used to take blood for testing, irrigate wounds, and provide liquid medications to animals via injection or oral route. A needle is not required when delivering orally or when cleaning wounds. Syringes allow the person dispensing medication to precisely measure the dosage prescribed to prevent either over- or under-medicating.
Animals can also be diagnosed with a disease they need to get injections, just like humans.
Because of any chronic disease, one must commit to ensuring that the pet enjoys a long and healthy life with you. Once diagnosed, they continue to take the same precautions and monitor their health. To help manage their health, the pet may even require routine injections from a pet syringe. To provide the necessary care to maintain the pet's health within its goal range, proper care for pets needs a specific amount of patience.
Need for Different Veterinary Syringes
The size of the syringe needed will rely on the size of the animal and the required dosage. Small animals should be given smaller quantities as directed by the veterinarian using one cubic centimeter, or cc, syringes. Smaller CC dosages can be administered using an enormous needle. Greater prescription volume calls for greater syringe size. For instance, you wouldn't want to use a one-cc syringe to give an animal three-cc worth of medicine since you would need to refill the needle three times to administer the correct quantity. The cc markers on the side of each syringe aid in measuring the proper dosage. A standard three cc syringe contains markings that read: 1/2 cc, one cc, 1 and 1/2 cc, two cc, 2 and 1/2 cc, and 3 cc. A milliliter, or ml, equals one cubic centimeter, or cc.
Need for Proper Disposal
Syringe barrels are typically disposable and made of plastic. If the syringe is not properly disinfected after each use, the structure helps prevent infections from spreading from one animal to another.
Types of Syringes
There are currently four primary categories of needle-free syringes:
- Split
- Pistol
- Pen
- And Table Top
The table top is typically used for immunizing young birds, the split type and pistol type are typically used for various animal injectable vaccines or pharmaceuticals, and the pen type is generally used for discarding humans or tiny animals.
One can buy syringes with a slip-lock Luer lock or a Luer lock. The threads on the Luer lock syringes allow a needle to be screwed onto the syringe and held there. The needle is firmly pushed onto the tapered end of Luer slip syringes. Syringes with a pointed end would be better for irrigating wounds or giving medication orally.
Ask your veterinarian or a veterinary assistant for assistance if you are unsure of what size syringe would be ideal for your intended application.
